Could you just leave my clock alone???

I totally hate it when they change the time on me.

I am nothing if not a creature of habit. Since I suffer from sleepus interruptus, and any stupid thing will set me off, this time change does not help.

Go sing my
old song if you wanna. I was up in the night humming it.

I obsess over details. I think about finances. I think about my family and the housework and my Girl Scout troop and shopping lists and old times and old friends and my mind gets on an endless loop. I sometimes resort to Melatonin to help me sleep. If several stressful things coincide with my hormonal cycle, I get really agitated and aggravated.

If the time change happens while all this is going on, I REALLY hate it. Of course the damn time change happened in the middle of all of it this time.

::sigh::

But I bet the idjits who keep changing the clocks back and forth never considered Steven*.

Well,
Steven came to me yesterday evening at work, looking worried. He said, “Can I call my mom?”

We let them call parents if they need to, but it was during the time she would be on the road, on her way to pick him up anyway.
I asked why.
I could see in his face that he was trying to hold back tears.
He said, “I think my mom got dead or something. She’s very late. Maybe she got in a car wreck.”

Oh my god. The poor kid. The fact that it was dark at 5 made him think his mom was late to pick him up and he was scared! I tried to explain the time change to him. I promised him that his mother was NOT late. That it was going to be dark every night while we were still playing with Legos and running in the gym. He didn’t look convinced, but he ran off to play.

When she arrived, I told her about his unease. We explained to him together that it would be dark every day when he is still with me.

I hope he doesn’t worry and stress out over it again, the poor kid. He’s only seven years old. He really doesn’t need to worry like that.

*He's not really Steven yadda yadda

  1. Oh, poor Steven. I'm such a worrier. I'm so afraid my children are going to end up just like me. Hope Steven was okay the next night.

  2. Our paper ran an article mentioning that although changing the time saved energy, we should expect to see more mood disorders and depression due to the wonked out timing of natural light in our lives (SAD and all that jazz). Plus, of course, a major increase in pedestrian deaths.

Because, of course, our lives and mental health are expendable. Energy savings are much more important.

I am over the time change thing. It's such a dead concept.

And how does it save energy. When it's daylight, we are outside. When it gets dark we all come in and USE more energy. Bunch of fucking liars, I tell you.

  4. Three things:
    1. Idjit is one of my favorite words.

    2. Poor, sweet kid. I remember constantly being scared that my mother would be hurt/killed while I was at school :-(

    3. You handled it so well! You're totally cool, Ami.
